At its worst, American politics seems to mirror Ancient Roman politics - that being the politics of the mob. Anger and fear are the biggest motivators in that realm.
When people who are not very well educated are told that their family's safety is threatened by (fill in the blank) they can be goaded into reacting with blind rage.
