Basements are Depressing

The world just looks a little shittier when looking at it through a basment window.

It makes me think of Steve McQueen. Why did he have to go an die? He was a totally realistic action hero, believable. Like he might be a guy you know or maybe even you. And likable. And tough but not because he was too stupid to feel the pain, but because he could fight through it. His face was expressive and his physical presence interesting. He'd do normal things and make them interesting. Not like Kommandant Arnold stilted, inhuman and fucking retarded (save Conan and Terminator.) Not a caracture of a human being.

Steve was always in solitary confinement struggling to maintain his sanity.

Today's Song of the Day is "Koyaanisqatsi" by Philip Glass off his 1983 film soundtrack "Koyaanisqatsi."

Crazy Fact: In the early '70s, he formed the Philip Glass Ensemble, a seven-piece group that had nowhere to play by art galleries and Max's Kansas City. Crazy!

I Love The Law.

I don't want to be a security guard at a Motörhead concert when I grow up.

There was only one room you could drink in. It was well lit and packed with tatoos and leather. The problem with this sort of set up is people pound them back and go back to the show no leisurely sips while enjoying the Motörheadian nuances. pound it and dig in to the mass and of course like any other high school dance we had to get ripped before we showed, it was Motörhead after all.

Since the ticket read no-re-entry there was an envitablity, smoking. People just lit up. The security guard tells them to put it out and they do, then move somewhere else and light another. So I'm standing around drinking in the drinking area, drinking waay to fast.

I look to the left and there is a criminally leathered, criminally tatooed, and most importantly criminally attitudified Metal King lounging at a table taking up as much space as possible with his Metal Queen on his lap snaping her gum, both smoking cigarettes. I know they are trying to scare me with the totally unoriginal manufactured look, and truthfully, it's working. A beefy security guard walks up, leans in and asks him to put it out. The Metal Lord slouched in his throne, looks at the cigarette, nods, taps the ash off it, looks the security guard back in the eye keeps smoking in utter disreguard of the law and this authority enforcing it. OF COURSE! This is a Motörhead show of course there will be a beligerant and generally anti-authoritarian bent to the crowd. even if just for tonight.

It was then I realize just how much I have to fear. The Law and general politeness is the only thing keeping me alive. As far as that whole survival of the fittest thing goes... anarchy would judge me not fit to live. If this went bad it could go so very very bad. Fortunately or unfortunately the only thing of value I have to lose in this situation is my life.

Fortunately I escaped with my life, unfortunately I was slopped and committed a number of gruesome Public Displays of Affection. If it was High School, it would have been my proudest moment. It, however, was not.

Today's Song of the Day is "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" by Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention off his 1970 album "Weasels Ripped My Flesh."

Crazy Fact: His Record Label, Verve, insisted on adding "of Invention" to the band's name.

Give Me That Rockin' Head.

It was a metal show a real one, Blinding lights, Marshall stacks, Crowd surfing, that glow of light around the silouette in front of you, the ghostly faces of hundreds behind and

so
very
loud.

So many metalheads. I had no idea there were so many men of the metal in this city. Every 30-Something corporate sell-out must've dusted off there leathers and Metallica T-shirts to relive the old days. I was mostly a poser. They may drive their mazdaerwhatever to their cubical, calculator and speed dial everyday but I betcha they know more of the lyrics than me. Actually I'm just a reformed corporate sell-out... who doesn't know the lyrics to 'Ace of Spades' let alone ANYTHING ELSE. So they are one rung higher then me on the coolness later that night I suppose.

Curses! I'll get you for this Corporate Sell-out Man!
I wonder who the supervillian is in this? Not easy so to determine. hmm.

anyway... Rock Rocks! more rock shows! more rock shows! don't make me MOVE goddamn it. next bring RADIOHEAD! It can't be that hard to replace a motor with a radio.

DO it!

Of COURSE Today's Song of the Day is "Ace of Spades" off their 1980 Album "Ace of Spades."

Crazy Fact: Lead Singer Lemmy Kilmister was born on Christmas Eve and briefly worked as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix.

me sing when loud when drunk.

I once argued that this was the greatest Pop song ever written. I was committed to this position, so it was convincing just on the basises of my conviction. I was wrong. but I still love it. totally love it, the swells, the contrasts, the duet harmony, the piano, the explosions of sound the wind effects. To me it sounds like the end of an era of music. They never made a song like this again. It's like what '18 and Life' was to hair metal, Grunge and Alt took the metal heads away. Nirvana was the executioners axe to metal, GnR hold bearly hold it together against them. the truth was GnR was a great metal band but nirvana was better music. sorry wife beater your out. Jane's Addiction has you beat... anyway this song has something seventies in it's production that was past its prime so kind of hits a softspot with me. Like fistful of wilted daisies or Arriving muddy and late to the prom. Like the perfect sad faced clown of pop music.

me like.

(I can't believe they use sleighbells!)

Today's Song of the Day is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler off her 1982 album "Faster Than the Speed of Night."

Crazy Fact: Nodules on her vocal cords prevented her from singing full time until 1976, when she underwent an operation to have them removed. The surgery left her with a fucking cool, raspy, husky voice.

Justice.

I couldn't imagine being strapped down to a table in front of a dozen people and killed in front of there eyes. I couldn't handle knowing someone payed 150 bucks to be the guy to do it. The fact that the state is doing it would be surreal. but the idea that I was innocent yet stood convicted and put to death for the murder of my own children would be...I am at a lost for words.

wow. texas might be the worst place in north america.

Listen buddy, it's about the Music.

The most beautiful song I've heard in a while.

Passing Afternoon by Iron and Wine

There are times that walk from you like some passing afternoon
Summer warmed the open window of her honeymoon
And she chose a yard to burn but the ground remembers her
Wooden spoons, her children stir her Bougainvillea blooms

There are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days
Autumn blew the quilt right off the perfect bed she made
And she's chosen to believe in the hymns her mother sings
Sunday pulls its children from the piles of fallen leaves

There are sailing ships that pass all our bodies in the grass
Springtime calls her children until she let's them go at last
And she's chosen where to be, though she's lost her wedding ring
Somewhere near her misplaced jar of Bougainvillea seeds

There are things we can't recall, Blind as night that finds us all
Winter tucks her children in, her fragile china dolls
But my hands remember hers, rolling around the shaded ferns
Naked arms, her secrets still like songs I'd never learned

There are names across the sea, only now I do believe
Sometimes, with the window closed, she'll sit and think of me
But she'll mend his tattered clothes and they'll kiss as if they know
A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone

Today's Song of the Day is "Passing Afternoon" by Iron And Wine off there 2004 album "Our Endless Numbered Days."

Crazy Fact: Iron and Wine is the stage name for one Samuel Beam, a Florida native that made his name by releasing lo-fi tapes in miami.

At Night.

'Is Sarah Calling the Police?'
'Yes.'
'Fuck.'
'I think he is moving, I saw him moving.'
'Fuck.'
'Tell them there mugging him now.'
'Jesus.'
'Jesus.'

When I got to him he was breathing.

He was lying flat on his back. naked from the waist up. his bloody shirt was a few feet away. He face was swollen... badly swollen all over. I asked his name. he didn't repond. His face was covered in blood in varying degrees of drying or bleeding there was a puddle of blood on the pavement, bigger then anything I'd ever seen.

I looked down the street and waved down a police car coming around the corner. The Police Officer asked him his name. I saw the ambulance down the street I waved them over. She asked me more questions, maybe it's a generational thing but giving the police personal information makes me nervous. Authority is not to be trusted. Esspecially not at face value. But this guy was bleeding everwhere and I saw almost everything.

the ambulance guys asked me what happened, so they got out the neck brace and the stretcher, I was relieved they got his name out of him. 'ok ricky we are going to get this brace on you. ready?'

man if I was lying there... jesus.

She said someone would be by to talk to me later so I went back in the bar and waited.

I thought about breaking the law. We do it all the time. Not just jay walking either. I was with a guy earlier than night buying drugs. I know of at least two people who drove under the influence. I saw at least four joints sparked up. I ripped off the ferry by 25 cents. I was definitely publicly intoxicated. And it's not the first time for any of this stuff. It makes you wonder if anyone gets caught ever, and if they do.... If you happen to be the sucker that's in the wrong place at the wrong time and you get arrested then you only go to jail if you don't have the money to get away with it. (OJ you killed the mother of your children.) So Jails are filled with those not just unlucky or just poor, but only if you are Poor AND Unlucky. Just like monopoly.

I still remember the look on the guys face as he walked by me, fear masked in agression. Fear held static by fists clenched. Eyes looking at me through the glass unsure but ready. Jaw clenched, body stiff with rage. Not ready to ask questions, but ready to answer in anyone in raw agression. He was acting as his own Bodyguard, under the orders of fear. He walked at a quick pace, away.

Hey, they want to talk to you again...

'Are you willing to fill out a sworn statement?'
'Sure.'

Wow cop vision makes me aware of how drunk I am jesus.

'ok well There were two groups of guys arguing a group of two and of four over there on the corner. The bigger group started running the smaller group gave chase. I got the fuck...er I got out of the way. I came in here. When I looked back out there was a man lying face down on the ground, not moving, arms by his side, I thought he was dead and then the other man was kicking him in the head repeatedly. His head was like a coconut in a potato sack. It was fucking awful. He was just lying there not moving and the guy was taking steps back to wind up for huge kicks at his head. I checked that Sarah was calling the cops, she was I gave her an update. They took his wallet and his jacket and his shirt. I went out and everyone was gone accept the guy on the ground lying on his back not moving. I could hear him gurgling so I knew he was alive, he face was a mess. Then you guys showed up.'

'Well the hospital says he is ok.'
'Good good.'

It was dawn by the time we started home.

On My Return

I went up the back stairs palms sweaty. I didn't know what to think. She had become a memory and an abstraction in the Ten Days I've been away transforming my mind in Europe. I knew that would happen, the transformation I mean, and I worried this sweaty palm thing into existence somewhere over the Atlantic.

In England, I pictured seeing her again, many times in my head and in the plane and the airport and in the other plane and in the other airport and in the car and at home and then in the car again and when walking down the street and now going up the stairs. Everytime I ran through it it was a little different. I thought that 8 hour flight was long... jeezus how many fucking stairs are on this stair case, too many and not enough.

What if I was crazy? What if it's nothing. It's a bag of hot air puffed by hope soon to be slowly deflating with the high pitched whine of dissapointment. God what if it's not what if this is one of the 'big ones.' jeesus. I've been getting used to the the dissappointing kind for a while now, maybe I'd perfer it was one of those. I think I could handle that. Disappointment requires very little commitment. But worse still what if she's THE big one. I'm getting old enough to hit THE big one. terrifyingly promising. This thought is too big to fit in my head, so let's hose it down, cool it off and stick it up in the clouds somewhere beside the winning 649 ticket.

Reconnecting is strange. There is a tightness in your chest that releases, there is a opening somewhere in your gut and a rising up of something and then a warmth. it's really something. You can only feel it after a real distance and with a mutual desire to reconnect. It's been a while since I've cooked up those ingredients. if you think it smells good, well shit you should try it, deee-licious.

We were at the rock show, The Weakerthans. It was really good. So was the band, but I could see the music in her body in her fist and her smile and her neck and on her lips. It was on her skin, it was rewarding. Her eyes flashed with it. IT was encouraging. I wasn't crazy, and more... it keeps coming. All that I saw before was still there, Paris didn't take it away, nor did my fear and even better, more, there's more she's still happening. Not frozen in my mind like she was but I could take her off pause and see more. I forgot about that. She'd spent so much time on pause in an emotional statis. I was half expecting to come back to judge what I'd already seen, but I didn't get a chance. She was still happening. I can get so stuck in my head sometimes.

Fear is frozen in time. It's a moment of fear, the fear is the cresendo of an awful turn of imagined events. It a bottle neck in a path. The squeeze on a choice. Fear is trying to help, but you have to try to make sure it doesn't squeeze the life out of you, you can't let it get too strong, you gotta take it on every now and then, or that imaginary fucker'll kick the crap out of your choices. haHA! I am Zorro!

Today's Song of the Day is "Left And Leaving" by The Weakerthans off there 2000 album "Left And Leaving."

Crazy Fact: The Weakerthans took their name from a line from the film adaptation of Marguerite Duras' The Lover: "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine."

Think Old

Conservatives are idiots. Whether it's the new pope, who according to the New York Times is "John Paul II, without the imagination' (wow. a new low, I didn't know it was possible. I thought the same of George Bush though and then they voted him in again. double wow.) or our own king idiot the next Prime Minister of Canada Preston Stockwell Steven Harper III, there's the zit on the longest list of dumbasses in Canadian history, an ass that is going to take a shit on civil rights faster than you can say 'vote of non-confidence.' Even then Offical Canadian Jackass Brian Mulroney, let we forget, would only take our money not our rights. Take the worst of both camps and form a new sub-creature of stupidity. I would say he'll never win, but I said the same thing about George Bush.

Remember the Spanish Revolution, comrades.

Eat Sleep Man Woman

While in Florida watching Spongebob on Nickelodeon I learned a little something my girlfriend prooved to me in bed. I'm not sure that sentence works but WHATEVA... I fart a lot. When your in bed you fart, you take a sniff make sure all is well down there and hit the snooze bar. Add a girlfriend and it's a little different... insert fear between fart and sniff and keep the fear cranked until you are sure it's bad. Then sheepishly murmer:

P: I farted and I'm sorry, it's bad, quite bad. Sorry.

S: I'm sure it not tha -GOOD LORD!

P: but it was SOO littLE! I had NO IDEA...

S: Jesus SAVE ME!

P: Yeah... it's bad. The thing is you don't want to breath through you nose 'cause of the smell and if you breathe through your mouth... well then you are tasting air that came out of my ass... even if you can't taste it...

S: (stunned pause) GROSS!!

P: Sometimes they're quiet and DON'T STINK I can't figure it..

S: Dude, you fart ALOT!

P: Really?

S: really.

As I lied there I remembered something I saw in between episodes of Spongebob. If you eat Meat your farts smell really bad and are small and if you eat vegitables you have a lot to fart but they don't REALLY smell. I think it's only Fair to the Girlfriend that I become a Vegitarian.

Today's Song of the Day is "Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas" by Bud Powell off his 1953 compliation "The Best Of Bud Powell."

Crazy Fact: In a racial incident, he was beaten on the head by police; Powell never fully recovered and would suffer from bad headaches and mental breakdowns throughout the remainder of his life.

Your, like, Ten!

Romeo and Juliet were like 13 years old. That's the joke. That's the Joke that no one really gets. When you were 13 you fell in love with the love of your life on a weekly basis, passionately, with all your soul, how could you not. You've only knows like 2 years of sexual awareness and like 10 years of life. It's amazing. Life is still happening to you for the first time and This 'love' thing is so new and intense, it's immpossible not to feel it as much as your little hormnoally flooded body is capable. I've never been so in love in my whole life, oh and look I've started growing pubes.

It's not like you gone through years of romantic disappointment, it's still in it's purest form untainted by fear.

If Romeo saw juliet's dirty underwear and barbie doll collection she might have become a little less cool, a little less on the star-crossed love side of things.

Juliet: And then I went to Saks with beth and portia and... well anyway and this yellow skirt and you would have loved it, I almost got it, but, you were with mercuicio and I think you should shop with us again it was SOOO much fun... Oh Romeo, Romeo.

Romeo: yeah, I ment to bring this up yesterday but...

Juliet: my love you know you can tell me ANYTHING, please tell me your hearts...

Romeo: Actually Juliet, I think I gotta go. There is this girl in science class that has these really cool jeans. And those braces of yours are really smelly. anyway I asked her out.

Juliet: You suck! I hate you! I hate boys! I hate everything. get out GET OUT!

Romeo: What? You're freaking out! what's the problem? jeeze ok pycho.

Juliet: oh heavy day!

Romeo: Catch you on the flip-side, baby!

Juliet: I hate you. I hope you die. Dad was right monteques SUCK! my dad's gonna kick your dad's ASS.

Romeo: Whatever. Later.

Juliet: I have to go shopping.

Today's Song of the Day is "Thirteen" by Big Star off their 1972 debut album "No. 1 Album."

olde badde moode

The bad mood goes WAAAY the fuck back. At least as old as emotion itself. I got a scoop of that this day. It's predictable. It's your garden variety 'up all not doing a paper' kind of bad mood. The worst is that when your done and you say, 'that's a piece of shit.' At least when I put in all the effort procrastinating, I like to have something I threw together at the last minute I can be proud of. Not this time. Cracks in it the size of the Grand Canyon. I'm having that expectation adjustment limbo. How looow can I gooo?

I hope I don't fall down. In this course it would just be embarrassing. This course is so lame I'd rather change my major than take it again. The worst part is I wish I was joking. If this course was Hobbiton and I, a Hobbit, I'd give Sauron the one Ring if he promised to wipe it out and make me an Orc. If I fail this course, it's like I'm at the 111 birthday party of Bilbo Baggins unable to get a drink, truly, outside the realm of natural law, challenging gravity itself. Nonetheless, here I am drinkless, almost floating, limboing low, willing myself into an Orc. I'll tell how it goes.

Today's Song of the Day is "Sympathy For The Devi" by The Rolling Stones off there 1968 Album "Beggars Banquet."

Crazy Fact: As reported on the CBC, the City of Moncton is trying to get the Rolling Stones to headline their Canada Day festivities. (celery says this is going to happen right after barbara streisand sings "people who need people" at the micmac friendship centre on gottingen street)

Lucky to be in Nova Scotia

Went to Duncan's Cove today in the beautiful sunshine. Amazing. Made me happy to be here. There haven't been a lot of things to make me happy to be here recently. I've been having too much life-threatening amazement 'abroad.' Nonetheless, today I felt very lucky to be hiking up and down huge grantic baoliths (sp? ROCKS) next to the ocean for 3 hours. Only ever seeing 1 other couple the whole time, no houses, no people, no cars, no unnatural sounds, just a sunny cloudless sky, miles of ocean, rocks, moss and Fiver. Fucking super fucking sweet. Colour, light and air forever it was a primal sort of beauty, undisturbed natural majesty.

Canada's OK after all.

Today's Song of the Day is "Piano Concerto No. 21 in C, K.467: ii. Andante" composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1785.

Crazy Fact: Before age of 20 W.A. Mozart had written nine operas, five violin concertos, at least 30 symphonies, a sheaf of divertimentos and serenades, a ream of liturgical pieces, six sonatas, and six concertos for Piano. CRazY!

I Think I Know How to Use a Semi-Colon.

School is, like, totally almost over. I'm looking forward to it. Until then I have to find less obvious ways to procrastinate, till then; publishing my procrastination is a bit much.

Today's Song of the Day is "Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble off his 1983 debut "Texas Flood."

Crazy Fact: In 1982, the band played the Montreux Festival and their performance caught the attention of David Bowie. Stevie Ray laid down the lead guitar tracks for what became Bowie's Let's Dance album in late 1982.

Now With Half the Calories!

Now when it comes to the Pope, I'm not all about the respect. I'm pretty glad he's dead. FINALLY. Hand me the living will I sign it NOW. I hope the Next Pope thinks it's Christian to prevent an entire continent from being wiped out by AIDS. If they cared about African lives as much they care about African souls maybe they'd start handing out condoms instead of condemning them. Perhaps then I could have respect, as it is, they might as be selling Pepsi, the Number on drink of the Afterlife.

I'm keeping my expectations low however. Just look at the track record.

Today's Song of the Day goes out to the Number One Guy in the Sky the Happiest Man to meet his Maker in the last 24 hours, Pope John Paul II, the Song "Better Off Without A Wife" by Tom Waits off his 1975 album "Nighthawks At The Diner."

Crazy Fact: This Crazy Cat was the First non-Italian Pope Ever. Dude! ciao baby!

The European Union at Dudes Table.

I'm terrified of my French on the Metro and their French on the bus, so I walk.

An hour and a half later. I get out of a Cab and I see a hungry Dennis, a sight unseen for 14 months. Oddly it was like yesterday, almost unnervingly so, except for the very first moment, I felt like I was meeting him at the Shoe for a Club Wrap and a Beer, except the Shoe was in Paris and an Italian restaurant and he had a girlfriend and no one spoke English. But the Dennis part was an island of familiarity in this crazy ancient fantasy world I climbed into.

Anjte (Dennis's Girlfriend) is speaking German to Mike, Italian to the Waiter, French to Jan and English to Me and throwing in a splash of Spanish for kicks and all of them to Dennis.

Pif: DUDE!

I said that a lot. Hardly English and Uber-north American. The Europeans were fascinated by my semi-coherent exclamations. I thought it was weird to Eat Italian in France, but it's as close to the real Italy as I've ever been so maybe it would be closer to real Italian food. We ate till forever. And there was much rejoicing.

Why can all these people speak all these languages? For shame North America. I felt so lame. Mostly we spoke English, which seems to be the worlds' lowest common denominator, But I wanted to carry on a conversation in one of these secret codes they all knew. I was SO NOT in there super cool European club. I felt like I might as well be an American. ick. not a good feeling.

Today's Song of the Day is "Metropolis" by Kraftwerk off their 1978 album "The Man Machine."

Crazy Fact: Rumour had it that they were robots.

marche et mange

We must've got lost EVERYTIME we left the house. But what a place to get lost. jeesus. If I have to get lost, I will gladly get lost in paris. For all the day, everyday, all we did is walk and eat. 23 Degrees and Sunny everyday.Total bliss. The metro is for suckers. cars are for fools. Send out the Clowns

Our second apartment by Place D'Italie was full of Clowns.

It was like our apartment was the 'art' equivalent of a clown car. Art is used very loosely here, you must keep in mind this is like comparing the Shakespeare and to the ad lib yammering of a brainless Video DJ. Nonetheless. Clown Art. Everywhere Clowns. Creepy Crowns. Crowns that seem to watch you. Move when you're not looking. Pull down there pants a little further, scheme behind your back. filled with malevolence behind a unctuous facade. The walls of the room were bubbling with malice.

Pif: Celery, I'm not sure if I have the words.

Celery: Creepy doesn't do it justice.

Pif: I know.

Celery: I counted 102 pieces of clown 'art' -no wait, look another stained glass sucker to the window thing, 103.

Pif: ick.

Celery: Let's go.

Cabinets filled, walls covered, on the tv under the tv, bookends, in the bathroom, kitchen, everywhere. Wherever your eyes rested a new and terrible discovery, there was literally no escape. It was so creepy that I swear it was depressing... Paris just didn't quit, like nothing i'd ever seen, in a way I never expected, again and again.

London Derry Air.

Dude, I totally didn't like London as much as Paris. Except when I went into a bar. I felt a lot more at home in a rock 'n' roll pub style bar. And as I walked around like a big-assed tourist camera in-hand pointing at rats and buckaham palace and strange candy wrappers, I thought to myself dude these guys are speaking english. I was so used to struggling with french in paris... no wait, that's not what I was thinking, I was thinking 'dude... where the queen? Maybe she's sitting on the throne right now or maybe she's taking a crap.' ...no wait, that's not it, I don't remember what I was thinking but whatever it was I had this song going through my head the whole time.

How Can I Possibly Concentrate?

DUDE! I forgot to tell you something, I'm going to Paris!

DUDE!

Why the HELL do I have to fly from Ottawa first? That's just lame. actually I don't fucking care. I'm just kinda trying to come up with a rant, for all I care we could stop in Moncton and North Bay I'm going to FUCKING PARIS!

I'm just trying to think of something to say besides:

!

!

!

'cause as it stands that's all I got.

ok.

I'm going to try and blog from La belle Paris (is it feminine? Je'n c'est pas.) But we will see. My eyes might have exploded in The Lovre or my brain may have fried in a café.

Me, in the Center of Style. Trouble. The holes in my clothes may be 'punk' here but there I'm sure it just plain 'street urchin.' I am primed for some Grade 'A' snobbery, parisian style. I can't wait. it will be awesome. I'll feel blessed by their snobbery.

Me: Dude that woman didn't look at me when you told me to Eat shit. ThAT wAs AWESome! And that tall salt-pepper guy in the Kick Ass blazer just spit on me! He hit me Right in the Eye! He's got Skillz. Let's do it again!

It's going to be like fair rides, terrified and exhilarated at the same time, totally out of my element. I am one with my embarrassment. It's pointless to fight it. It's utterly inevitable, much french is abhorrent, my english isn't even very good. I'm a slob and never been particularly good at caring what I look like. I'm going to go around crying and screaming and freaking out from one painting to sculpture to monument to another like the tasteless white-bread North American I am. I'm fucking doomed. I fucking love it.

Stuff Your Freedom Fries up you ASS!

I'm a little worried about being thought to be an american. My French is awful. Bloddy awful. I'm white as hell and don't have an British Accent. Americans are calling themselves Canadian to get by over there. It bites. I'm desperate to speak french for that reason, it's all I got.

And speaking French is kinda like chop-sticks. A little bit hard to do, easier if you keep working at it and it really lets you know your doing something outside the ordinary. You know your really accepting another culture and trying to understand it from the inside out.

I love eating with chop sticks it makes it really special. Well, French is mental chopsticks. The Chopsticks of the Mind.

Healing the Routine Canal.

Wow. Routine is a hard thing to maintain. Well kind of. It's like this. There comes a point in your life when things settle into a pattern, a comfortable pattern, an important and productive pattern, then you get a new job or new house or new friend and everything has to shift. Like an ice-flow. Some things are squeezed out and submerged to make room. That's just the way of things.

It's odd to see what drops out. It's at moments you are forced to re-evaluate the importance of certain behaviors. And the routine doesn't lie, certain things just drop out and you don't really think about it anymore. It's a crucial moment, because it's easy to make the wrong decisions at this point. Then months later you realized there is someone you really miss, or it been 6 months since you've read a book or you haven't hiked or biked or been to the gym or played hockey or took some time to yourself in 3 weeks.

Must remember solitude. If you don't these bad choices can go unchecked (at the very minimum.)

I am going to paris.

These two things are amazing and unrelated. I'm going to try to to think about either too much or my head might pop off. Cold Feet (Part Two)

That's the tequila was for, it was ball enhancer. With every swig I was closer to my big be-nutted viking ancestors. Well, between the hot tub and the tequila, it was pretty clear my babied north american self had to get there through mexico though. enh whateva (swig. glug. swig)

Pif: This tequila is really fucking good. It doesn't have that nasty tear off your face thing to it.

Ali: It's good isn't it? My girlfriend brought it from Mexico.

Caleb: Ok lets do this!

We are pumped. It's like a conga line of steaming mostly naked skinny men. as all seven of us jump out of the tub one after another and gingerly half run on the icy snow through the cold night. whooping and screeching are way down the 30 or so meters to the dock.

I cruise down at top barefoot don't stub your toe speed and I stop dead on the edge of the dock. I peer down into the black cold lake. The moon is nearly full and casting and ghostly cold snowy glow across the lake and into the mountain that surround us. I stare at that water and try to convince a couple billion years of evolution that THIS is a good idea. There is no convincing. The boys are chanting "do it, doo it DOOO it!" as an act of pure will (fueled up on the finest tequila I've ever had in all my drinking days) I leap into the void.

My brain was instantly filled with every chemical it has at it's disposal, and every gland in every corner of my body pumped something out, adrenaline, dopamine, endorphins, (all just use the all inclusive 'whatever' at this point) I didn't even feel the cold. Everything they say is true. it's amazing. truly. I went back inside and started jumping and howling and screaming wildly like a new man re-birthed. Everyone was in the exact same emotional condition at that moment. That emotional condition is "!!!"

Finally I look down. Not only did I not feel the cold, but I also didn't feel my toe nail pulled up, bend backwards and bleeding. I wonder when I did that? I continue howling and shaking defiant fists at valhalla. I'm totally unable to snap out of it. I look down again, yuck, I should fix that. I keep beating my chest and yelling at the gods in a euphoria of indescribable victory. I look down. Fuck it's bleeding everywhere. eww. I stand empowered, triumphantly calling down the wraith of the heavens. Indestructible, with fear laying defeated, bleeding at my feet... literally, oh that's MY foot. shit time to clean this up.

After about 15 minutes the buzz started to slip, I returned to my mortal, fearful form and nervously bandage up my blackening toe, thinking only of the flesh-eating disease.

Fear's vacation was welcome, even if it was a short one.

Cold Feet.

A cabin in New Hampshire will teach you a few things. I didn't really know there was such a thing as good tequila. Well there is.

Caleb: Pif! Go out and crank up the hot tub. We are gonna do this!

Pif: You got it Pontiac!

I pull on my enormous boots and tear out into the freezing (minus 15) night to 'Crank that mutha up' Predictably, I trip over god knows what and whack my knee harder then I've ever heard anything get smacked against ANYTHING, ever. Like a wrecking ball of pain into my soul, my central nervous was so stunned by the pain all I could do was freeze in place and grimace in blinding pain. Then after a moment, like my entire being was inhaling, preparing itself for this, I howl. Primal, like a beast, like a mutha fucka, I howl. Surprisingly it helps. I stumble the last few feet to the hot tub, realize I have absolutely no idea how to 'crank this mutha' so I whine and limp and stumble my way back to the main cabin.

Wren: What the hell did you do to yourself?!

Pif: FUCK! I an invisible monster of Pain just fucking kicked me in the knees. It hurts I'll live. The water will fix me.

Caleb: Let's do this.

We make ready. And all seven of us head through the cold to the near steaming hot tub. The steam coming out of it is like a smokestack into the night. I can't even see the other side. I start throwing snow through the steam cloud just to see who yelps from the other side.

Ariel and Ali: Hey!

fun. I do it again.

Rob and Caleb: Hey fucker! (snow splatters back at me in an act of vengence)

very fun.

Wren: (shaking a bottle of tequila in my face) Power up, 'cause when you hit that water your going to need it.

About ten minutes before pounded my knee into the most mysterious and hardest substance in the known solar-system I had run out into the bitter cold and broke all the ice around the dock for one inevitability. You guessed it. To go jump in the lake. all seven of us. I hope I have the balls to jump in and I hope I don't leave them in the lake when I get out. It makes me wonder if it's actually possible to freeze them off. We will see.

People are Tricky.

People react to things in unexpected ways. They think they can cover up their emotions. Well they can, mostly because people let them operate under that guise. The fact that people let them gives many of us the false feeling that we are capable of hiding our emotional reactions, like we are smarter than the rest. What's really strange is when you call someone's bluff, When you say, I saw that. If you can pin them down and talk about it you can get an insight into that person and that moment. Then the present can be much more present, more valuable. It's exploration can be richly engauging, much more interesting than what I'm used to. I'm used to thinking mostly in hindsight, safe ol' hindsight, 'Yup, that's what I shoulda done, I guess it's too late now, better luck next time.'

Terrified Beyond the Capacity for Rational Thought

Just fucking shoot me. I can't deal with this so today I'm handing off to Bill Moyers.
---------------------------------------

No Tomorrow
by Bill Moyers

One of the biggest changes in politics in my lifetime is that the delusional is no longer marginal. It has come in from the fringe, to sit in the seat of power in the Oval Office and in Congress. For the first time in our history, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington.

Theology asserts propositions that cannot be proven true; ideologues hold stoutly to a worldview despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. When ideology and theology couple, their offspring are not always bad but they are always blind. And there is the danger: voters and politicians alike, oblivious to the facts.

Remember James Watt, President Ronald Reagan's first secretary of the interior? My favorite online environmental journal, the ever-engaging Grist, reminded us recently of how James Watt told the U.S. Congress that protecting natural resources was unimportant in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. In public testimony he said, "after the last tree is felled, Christ will come back."

Beltway elites snickered. The press corps didn't know what he was talking about. But James Watt was serious. So were his compatriots out across the country. They are the people who believe the Bible is literally true - one-third of the American electorate, if a recent Gallup poll is accurate. In this past election several million good and decent citizens went to the polls believing in the rapture index.

That's right - the rapture index. Google it and you will find that the best-selling books in America today are the 12 volumes of the "Left Behind" series written by the Christian fundamentalist and religious-right warrior Timothy LaHaye. These true believers subscribe to a fantastical theology concocted in the 19th century by a couple of immigrant preachers who took disparate passages from the Bible and wove
them into a narrative that has captivated the imagination of millions of Americans.

Its outline is rather simple, if bizarre (the British writer George Monbiot recently did a brilliant dissection of it and I am indebted to him for adding to my own understanding): Once Israel has occupied the rest of its "biblical lands," legions of the antichrist will attack it, triggering a final showdown in the valley of Armageddon.

As the Jews who have not been converted are burned, the messiah will return for the rapture. True believers will be lifted out of their clothes and transported to Heaven, where, seated next to the right hand of God, they will watch their political and religious opponents suffer plagues of boils, sores, locusts and frogs during the several years of tribulation that follow.

I'm not making this up. Like Monbiot, I've read the literature. I've reported on these people, following some of them from Texas to the West Bank. They are sincere, serious and polite as they tell you they feel called to help bring the rapture on as fulfillment of biblical prophecy. That's why they have declared solidarity with Israel and the Jewish settlements and backed up their support with money and volunteers. It's why the invasion of Iraq for them was a warm-up act, predicted in the Book of Revelations where four angels "which are bound in the great river Euphrates will be released to slay the third part of man." A war with Islam in the Middle East is not something to be feared but welcomed - an essential conflagration on the road to redemption. The last time I Googled it, the rapture index stood at 144 - just one point below the critical threshold when the whole thing will blow, the son of God will return, the righteous will enter Heaven and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire.

So what does this mean for public policy and the environment? Go to Grist to read a remarkable work of reporting by the journalist Glenn Scherer - "The Road to Environmental Apocalypse." Read it and you will see how millions of Christian fundamentalists may believe that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed - even hastened - as a sign of the coming apocalypse.

As Grist makes clear, we're not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. Nearly half the U.S. Congress before the recent election - 231 legislators in total and more since the election - are backed by the religious right.

Forty-five senators and 186 members of the 108th Congress earned 80 to 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian right advocacy groups. They include Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Assistant Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Conference Chair Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Policy Chair Jon Kyl of Arizona, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Roy Blunt. The only Democrat to score 100 percent with the Christian coalition was Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia, who recently quoted from the biblical book of Amos on the Senate floor: "The days will come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land." He seemed to be relishing the thought.

And why not? There's a constituency for it. A 2002 Time-CNN poll found that 59 percent of Americans believe that the prophecies found in the book of Revelations are going to come true. Nearly one-quarter think the Bible predicted the 9/11 attacks. Drive across the country with your radio tuned to the more than 1,600 Christian radio stations, or in the motel turn on some of the 250 Christian TV stations, and you can hear some of this end-time gospel. And you will come to understand why people under the spell of such potent prophecies cannot be expected, as Grist puts it, "to worry about the environment. Why care about the earth, when
the droughts, floods, famine and pestilence brought by ecological collapse are signs of the apocalypse foretold in the Bible? Why care about global climate change when you and yours will be rescued in the rapture?

And why care about converting from oil to solar when the same God who performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes can whip up a few billion barrels of light crude with a word?"

Because these people believe that until Christ does return, the Lord will provide. One of their texts is a high school history book, "America's Providential History." You'll find there these words: "The secular or socialist has a limited-resource mentality and views the world as a pie ... that needs to be cut up so everyone can get a piece." However, "[t]he Christian knows that the potential in God is unlimited
and that there is no shortage of resources in God's earth ... while many secularists view the world as overpopulated, Christians know that God has made the earth sufficiently large with plenty of resources to accommodate all of the people."

No wonder Karl Rove goes around the White House whistling that militant hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers." He turned out millions of the foot soldiers on Nov. 2, including many who have made the apocalypse a powerful driving force in modern American politics.

It is hard for the journalist to report a story like this with any credibility. So let me put it on a personal level. I myself don't know how to be in this world without expecting a confident future and getting up every morning to do what I can to bring it about. So I have always been an optimist. Now, however, I think of my friend on Wall Street whom I once asked: "What do you think of the market?" "I'm optimistic," he answered. "Then why do you look so worried?" And he answered: "Because I am not sure my optimism is justified."

I'm not, either. Once upon a time I agreed with Eric Chivian and the Center for Health and the Global Environment that people will protect the natural environment when they realize its importance to their health and to the health and lives of their children. Now I am not so sure. It's not that I don't want to believe that - it's just that I read the news and connect the dots.

I read that the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared the election a mandate for President Bush on the environment. This for an administration:

That wants to rewrite the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act protecting rare plant and animal species and their habitats, as well as the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires the government to judge beforehand whether actions might damage natural resources.

That wants to relax pollution limits for ozone; eliminate vehicle tailpipe inspections, and ease pollution standards for cars, sport-utility vehicles and diesel-powered big trucks and heavy equipment.

That wants a new international audit law to allow corporations to keep certain information about environmental problems secret from the public. That wants to drop all its new-source review suits against polluting, coal-fired power plants and weaken consent decrees reached earlier with coal companies. That wants to open the Arctic [National] Wildlife Refuge to drilling and increase drilling in Padre Island National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world and the last great coastal wild land in America.

I read the news just this week and learned how the Environmental Protection Agency had planned to spend $9 million - $2 million of it from the administration's friends at the American Chemistry Council - to pay poor families to continue to use pesticides in their homes. These pesticides have been linked to neurological damage in children, but instead of ordering an end to their use, the government and the industry were going to offer the families $970 each, as well as a camcorder and
children's clothing, to serve as guinea pigs for the study.

I read all this in the news.

I read the news just last night and learned that the administration's friends at the International Policy Network, which is supported by Exxon Mobil and others of like mind, have issued a new report that climate change is "a myth, sea levels are not rising" [and] scientists who believe catastrophe is possible are "an embarrassment."

I not only read the news but the fine print of the recent appropriations bill passed by Congress, with the obscure (and obscene) riders attached to it: a clause removing all endangered species protections from pesticides; language prohibiting judicial review for a forest in Oregon; a waiver of environmental review for grazing permits on public lands; a rider pressed by developers to weaken protection for crucial habitats in California.

I read all this and look up at the pictures on my desk, next to the computer - pictures of my grandchildren. I see the future looking back at me from those photographs and I say, "Father, forgive us, for we know not what we do." And then I am stopped short by the thought: "That's not right. We do know what we are doing. We are stealing their future. Betraying their trust. Despoiling their world."

And I ask myself: Why? Is it because we don't care? Because we are greedy? Because we have lost our capacity for outrage, our ability to sustain indignation at injustice? What has happened to our moral imagination?

On the heath Lear asks Gloucester: "How do you see the world?" And Gloucester, who is blind, answers: "I see it feelingly.'"

I see it feelingly.

The news is not good these days. I can tell you, though, that as a journalist I know the news is never the end of the story. The news can be the truth that sets us free - not only to feel but to fight for the future we want. And the will to fight is the antidote to despair, the cure for cynicism, and the answer to those faces looking back at me from those photographs on my desk. What we need is what the ancient
Israelites called hochma - the science of the heart ... the capacity to see, to feel and then to act as if the future depended on you.

Believe me, it does.

Bill Moyers was host until recently of the weekly public affairs series "NOW with Bill Moyers" on PBS. This article is adapted from AlterNet, where it first appeared. The text is taken from Moyers' remarks upon receiving the Global Environmental Citizen Award from the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School.

Hallmark Sux Dix

Ok as we know this 'celebration' known as Valentine's Day is all about Guilt and fear for those of you with Significant others. To those of us with insignificant others it's about shame and self-loathing, a painful reminder of our lonesome and socially deficient status. yum. two scoops for me.

So I've decided to embrace it and break my own heart. If I don't cry by the end of the night i'm a total failure. I'm going to listen to every cheesey 'just gets to me' love song I can find and I got a heartbreaker of a film or so Cel tells me (Before Sunset.) I think that should do the trick. If that doesn't work I go through old photos and put on the break up music. wow that one should really do the trick. ok ok but if that doesn't work I'll have to put on Lord of the Rings, that works everytime. I don't know why but it does. If some could tell me why you'll save me a tonne of money in Psychotherapy. We at the pif institute of navel gazing would really appreciate any tips.

Fortunately, I have a cute Brown furry Four legged Valentine. DAMN he's cute!

Ok time to get to the cryin'!

Today's Song of the Day is "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" performed by Ella Fitzgerald off her 1956 album "The Cole Porter Songbook" composed by Cole Porter in 1928.

Crazy Fact: Cole Porter studied law and music at Harvard, all courtesy of a rich grandfather. His grandfather was appalled Porter would consider music as a career and never forgave him.

Just Do It Solo.

I don't like Bob Dylan with a band as much as Bobby D solo. The band clutters it all up. Anyway here, listen to this to illustrate my point. There's usually all these asshole musicians playing along, i'm sure there are very good at plaing their instruments, but it's not a band. Lets get real. That Rob Zimmerman is a one man show, whoever goes gets on stage with him, that's cool but I could take or leave them. I'm not here to see them. Actually if I had my druthers I'd boot them. How could they be a band, there a bunch of hired guns, who doubtless idealize him, as well the should. but come on,

"Hey Bob, how about it we do one of mine for a change."
"Your fired."

Today's Song of the Day is "Just Like A Woman" by Bob Dylan off his 1998 album "Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The Royal Albert Hall Concert."

Crazy Fact: Bob Dylan just released an Autobiography and did his first interview in decades on 60 minutes in January of this year to support it. I saw it a very cool interview.

A is for Asshole J is for Jackass

I'm tired of jackasses infiltrating my life. I have little patience for them treating me and/or my friends like shit. Jackasses. And I'm not talking about those friendly MTV jackasses hurting themselves for our amusement. I'm talking about full of shit Jackasses that talk out there asses and believe the shit they say. They'll say whatever sounds like the right thing to say and believe it. That's the killer. They convince themselves, that's what makes them so believable. Such Jackasses.

An Asshole, doesn't believe his lies but KNOWS he's lying. Actually I think that's a bastard. Hence the Lying Bastard. I'm not even sure what an asshole is... insensitive and belligerent, combative and loud, maybe? Maybe I don't know. I guess I need to understand my asshole. I need a mirror. I've hoid of navel-gazing, but this is re-DICK-u-lass.

Today's Song of the Day is "The House That Jack Built" by Aretha Franklin released in 1968.

I'll Get You For This Trebec!

Oh my god. Celebrity Jeopardy is no joke:

"When Teri Garr appeared on "Jeopardy" in '99, she tied with Naomi Judd for second place behind Jane Curtin -- Teri and Naomi finished with $0, and no one answered the Final Jeopardy question correctly: "For your information, this TV sit-com that debuted in '88 is the longest-running sit-com still on the air," Naomi said "The Cosby Show," Teri said "Seinfeld," and Jane said "Married ... with Children," but the right answer was "Murphy Brown."

(I got it from Here: www.swinginchicks.com/workinitfordaddy.htm)

I really like Teri Garr if for no other reason than Young Frankenstein, but dude. oh dude. AND She was once dated Elvis Presley. DUDE!

Today's Song of the Day is "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" composed by lyricist Roy Turk and composer Lou Handman performed here by Elvis Presley released as a B-side in 1960.

Crazy Fact: it's Elvis! You've heard it all. He should've died in the army not on the throne.

3 out of 10 is bad

Do this. We know nothing and by 'we' i mean 'I' about Canadian music. I'd try to make up for it by making it Canada Week on SOTD but I don't have the stomach to send out Helix, Payolas and Zappacosta tunes for the rest of the week. Oh god if you can name me a worse Canadian 'artist' that Zappacosta, I'd like to hear it no no I mean see it. If it's that bad seeing is enough.. really.

Honestly I had trouble filling out that stupid quiz I was bored to tears. As soon as I read names like David Foster, Master T and "Canada’s Polka King" well my eyes were rolling so exaggeratedly I could hear myself get dizzy. god 'Master T'! Jesus! I want to say the Master and The Mister duke it out for the true 'T' title. I guess I really just wanna see Master T get the crap kicked out of him, I don't care if's it's by a pack of kids.

Today's Song of the Day is "The Seeker" by The Who off their 2000 compliation "BBC Sessions."

Crazy Fact: In 1965, Daltrey claimed he would kill himself before reaching 30 because he didn't want to get old. He still performs this, explaining that the song is about an attitude, not a physical age. I saw him in an infomerical for a 60's music compliation and he is all attitude. all attitude.

Steve Martin is a Jerk.

Dude. I've been let down by my childhood a few times recently. For Example: I thought Steve Martin 'lost it.' dude, I'm afraid to say, he may never of had it. I thought 'Father of the Bride' and 'Parenthood' were the shameful products of a career gone sour, they may just be products of a lame lame man. I done gone 'n' growed up I reckon. shit. I'm a little scared to see 'the jerk' I thought that was the funniest movie ever fro years, but I also thought that of 'the man with two brains' not so funny. dude. Me 'n' Cel couldn't even finish it.

You mean... it was never good. That's too much for me to handle. I never ever ever had bad taste. I'm Sure of it. SURE OF IT!

Today's Song of the Day is "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi off their 1986 album "Slippery When Wet."

It's Been a Long Time.

I'm writing again. my life fell into a whole unexpectedly. oops. I never seem to look where I'm going. can I get an 'amen!' Am I the only one? no. c'mon. do it you losers. anyway.

my feet are stinky. At the height of my procrastination I laundered my slippers. that's a painful thing to admit but it's true. My feet were stinky so I laundered my slippers. laundered... that's the only way to wash slippers really. laundered. And I had buttered scones and tea on the trolley. laundered. really that word makes about as much sense as me laundering slippers.

The Other Half of Me: HEY PIF... YEAH YOU IDIOT BOY... if your feet smell wash your FEET, dumb-ass, not the slippers. FUCK! How did I get stuck with you of all people.

Well anyway... nothings working I washed my boot liners too. they still stink.

The Other Half: ... oh ...my ...god. (long angry pause) FEET!

Maybe it's the carpet?

The Other Half of Me: for GOD SAKE man! FEET! FEET!

Todays' Song of the Day "Sexy Boy" by Air off their 1998 album" Moon Safari."
